Professor Leo Poon, born and raised in Hong Kong, is an internationally renowned expert currently at the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the early stage of the outbreak, he led his team to develop the first rapid diagnostic test kits for coronavirus within a very short period of time. Meet our Scientist : Journey of Ben Cowling 我們的科學家 - 高本恩

Professor Benjamin Cowling, an acclaimed infectious disease epidemiologist, moved to Hong Kong in 2004 after the SARs epidemic. He is at the forefront of informing local and international governments and agencies on population wide measures to slow down transmission to contain the spread of COVID-19. His expertise and capacity continues to expand beyond influenza research into many other diseases and decision making capacities to contribute to global health security. Meet our Scientist - Journey of Joseph Wu 我們的科學家 - 胡子祺

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Professor Joseph Wu channels his expertise in mathematical and statistical modelling in the field of public health, and has been conducting research on communicable and non-communicable diseases. His current work, fundamental to the COVID-19 advisory roles he holds with local and international organisations, provides important insights into the public health strategies necessary for fighting against this pandemic. Meet our Educator - Journey of Janice Johnston 我們的教育家 - 莊臻寧

Originated from British Columbia, Canada, Dr Janice Johnston moved to Hong Kong 30 years ago and spearheaded the Master of Public Health (MPH) programme. As a highly experienced medical educator, she is passionate about developing public health programmes which equip people to be effective public health practitioners. To date, Dr Johnston has witnessed over a thousand students graduate from HKU’s MPH programme. Many alumni are currently working at the forefront of COVID-19 response measures, to make Hong Kong a safer and healthier place.

Meet our Health Economist - Journey of Dr Karen Grépin 我們的衞生經濟學家 – Karen Grépin

Dr Karen Grépin is a health economist and comparative health systems researcher. In early 2020, she moved from Canada to Hong Kong to join the School of Public Health, HKU. Since obtaining her PhD in Heath Policy (Economics) from Harvard University, Dr Grépin has worked extensively on health policies which developing countries adopt, and their impact on population health. Immediately after arriving in Hong Kong, Dr Grépin's experience has been foundational to understanding and implementing COVID-19 governmental responses in Africa, and to providing recommendations on how governments in Asia and around the world must prepare for and respond to future outbreaks.
