HKU is renowned for its vibrant research environment and commitment to talent development. Its research efforts span various disciplines across its ten Faculties, attracting top-tier scholars and students from around the globe. Of the 1000+ professoriate staff, roughly a third each are from Hong Kong, Mainland China, and elsewhere around the world. Students from over 60 regions and countries outside of Hong Kong make up 80% of the total research postgraduate student population. Research postgraduate students have opportunities to take part in overseas training and international research collaboration. HKU is also implementing strategies, infrastructure, and curricula to encourage innovation and forward-thinking among staff and students alike.
Our Researchers and Research Stories
HKU researchers have an impressive track record in securing funding through competitive funding schemes, publishing their findings, and translating their research to benefit the local and global community. Their work has earned a wide range of international, national and local honours and awards, including the Porter Medal, the American Chemical Society National Award, the Bailar Medal, State Natural Science Awards, Future Science Prizes, Excellent Young Scientist Fund awards and Changjiang Scholarships. HKU researchers are also garnering recognition from prestigious academies, with our scholars holding around 100 memberships of about 25 academies around the world as well as in Hong Kong and Mainland China.
