‘Reduction of Illegal Global Wildlife Trade through Novel Conservation Forensics Research'
The team received the Knowledge Exchange Excellence Award for their conservation research and endeavours in combating illegal wildlife trade. They worked with multiple taxa in monitoring over-exploitation in wildlife trading and have also introduced a variety of tools, like molecular-level techniques, to track the trade routes and provide evidence to help mitigate the impact of wildlife trade.
HKU Innovator Award
Professor TANG Chuyang, Department of Civil Engineering
Professor Tang was the inaugural recipient of the HKU Innovator Award for the development of high-efficiency and environmentally sustainable filter materials that remove harmful pollutants from water and air. His patented water filter offers instant removal of heavy metals, bacteria and other contaminants, and can operate powered only by gravity, without the need for electricity and chemicals, making it perfect for emergency water treatment needs. A reusable air filter that provides high permeability and removal efficiency has also been developed in response to the COVID-19 situation.
HKU Young Innovator Award
Dr KWOK Ka Wai, Department of Mechanical Engineering
Aspiring to advance and transform engineering technologies into real clinical practice, Dr Kwok received the HKU Young Innovator Award for his impactful and pioneering work in surgical robotics. His innovations have been recognised by international robotics societies with awards and also received industry interest for further commercial development.
