Alya Prasad, a Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Science (BEd&BSc) student is living her dream life: excellent academic results with plenty of eye-opening extra-curricular experiences. More importantly, she has been able to make an impact on others’ lives, bringing her great joy and a sense of satisfaction.

Alya chose the BEd&BSc programme offered by the HKU Faculty of Education for several reasons. On a personal level, she was inspired by both her father and her biology teacher back in secondary school. Growing up, she watched her father enjoying every moment in his job and how he viewed his workplace as a family. He cares about his students and would often invite them home to have lunch and snacks with his kids. This made her want to follow in his footsteps. Coincidentally, her father is also a graduate of the Faculty, having completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Education programme. At the same time, Ms Lee, her biology teacher, had a huge impact on her as she was optimistic, approachable and made the classes enjoyable: “Students were never afraid of approaching Ms Lee if there was something they did not understand. I’ve admired her teaching approaches and viewed her as a role model from a young age.” As such, Alya decided to become a biology teacher so as to simultaneously pursue her interests in teaching and biology.

Alya happily shared why she chose HKU and the Faculty: “HKU is a renowned university with an internationally recognised reputation, and exposure to high-quality learning experiences is guaranteed. I’ve found the BEd&BSc programme enriching because of its multiple opportunities for learning, interacting, reflecting and growing. The class size is small and intimate, which allows me to establish closer bonds with my teachers and classmates. Teachers can give each student tailor-made feedback, which definitively helps me identify very specific areas that need improvement.”

Alya (centre) finds the BEd&BSc programme enriching both in terms of learning outcomes and interpersonal relationships. She established close bonds with her classmates and teachers.

Alya has been actively involved in various extra-curricular activities. She was nominated to represent HKU as a delegate at the 2nd Peace Summit of Emerging Leaders at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand in early 2020. “It was a life-changing, emotional and moving experience. I had the priceless opportunity to listen to distinguished speakers and exchange ideas with them. I also shared my story with 300 fellow delegates.”

In the conference, Alya met many people who shared similar ideas: “I’m glad that I was able to meet with delegates from 50 countries. I met Priscilla, a fellow delegate from the National University of Singapore, who’s passionate about art and music, and we found that we’ve shared similar experiences in volunteering and artistic projects. We decided to merge these experiences to make impacts through art.” That was how Artpeace, a global youth organisation that aims to raise awareness and create positive social change through art initiatives, was founded. It comprises 12 members from seven countries, many of them being delegates of the Peace Summit.

Alya met a lot of fellow delegates in the conference, some of them later joined “Artpeace”.

Alya’s extra-curricular experiences have helped her greatly with her studies. Her love for drama and music has not only broadened her horizons and opened up avenues, but has also inspired her to think about how science can be taught in more innovative ways. For instance, she wrote a post-lesson song on friction to summarise the key concepts and sang it in front of the class on a ukulele. “Thanks to my previous experience on stage, I became much more confident in the classroom,” said Alya.

Alya is a lover of dance, drama and music. Her experience on stage makes her more confident in teaching.

Even though Alya has won many awards such as the Dean’s honours list and Madam Chu Kwai Ying Memorial Scholarship, she was modest when she talked about these achievements: “Winning an award brings excitement of course, but that can be short-lived. I think it’s more valuable to see how much I’ve grown. It’s even more meaningful to create long-lasting impacts in people’s lives through art.”

Alya’s story is part of our video series called “A Learning Journey Like No Other”, which shares the unique experience, distinctive journeys and remarkable stories of our elite students and graduates.
