The Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong will hold a seminar on “The Future of President Xi’s Belt and Road Initiative: Challenges and Opportunities under US President Trump” on December 16, 2016 (Friday).

Professor Patrick Mendis will explore the origin of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and its evolution to see the prospects for China and its participants around the world. With the potential withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, President-elect Donald Trump is signaling a series of changes to Sino-American relations and Pacific affairs. The speaker will discuss the likely challenges and opportunities in an unpredictable future with the Trump administration.

Professor Patrick Mendis, a Harvard Kennedy School’s former Rajawali senior fellow, is author of Peaceful War: How the Chinese Dream and the American Destiny Create a Pacific New World Order. He is a distinguished visiting professor of Asian-Pacific relations at Shandong University and a senior fellow at Pangoal Institution in Beijing. A former American diplomat and military professor in the NATO and Pacific Commands, he currently serves as a commissioner to the US National Commission for UNESCO at the U.S. Department of State.
