來自十六個國家的高等教育領導人於今天2011年9月28日為研究生加強和建立職業發展共同公佈了一份原則聲明。
這份協議是在第五屆全球策略領導人高峰會後達成的共識，高峰會標題名為「研究生的職業發展：追蹤及記錄」。是次高峰會是由以建基於美國的研究生院協會和香港大學研究學院共同主辦。高峰會是每年一度的盛事，旨在推廣世界各地碩士生和博士生的研究生教育。
是次研究生的職業發展的重點包括:
- 鋻於學生對就業發展機會的需求日益增加，大專院校正致力提升研究生專業技能和職業發展的培育。
- 在競爭激烈的全球經濟中，各地政府正努力加強研究生培育與勞動力發展之間的聯繫。
- 僱主們在國內及全球的對話中，提及畢業生所需的技能及他們對畢業生的期望。
許多大學已開始努力尋求更好的方法追蹤畢業生的職業發展，並制定相關課程，裝備學生盡快適應瞬息萬變的職業需求。是次高峰會探討開創關注學生職業及專業發展的院校文化，定義新的專業技能，課程及教研人員在支持學生職業發展上所扮演的角色，全球趨勢對職業及專業需要的影響，以及全球合作的機會。
香港大學副校長(研究)及研究學院院長譚廣亨教授說 :「35位大學及研究生院領導人於是次高峰會訂下重要的發展路向，好讓我們為知識型社會的未來領袖提供所需的支援。」譚教授續說:「今年是香港大學100 週年，香港大學適逢其會於此時與研究生院協會(Council of Graduate Schools)合辦這個重要的國際性會議，實在饒有意義及令人振奮。」
在會議的最後一節，與會者達成共識並擬訂了一套基本原則，就於與會者其國內及透過國際間的網絡追踪研究生職業發展，以及提昇他們於投身各行各業前的職前準備，總結了一個參考框架，以便建立及互相交流最佳的策略及處理方法。
CGS主席Dr Stewart說:「一如以往，是次高峰會探討了各式其式的最佳策略，為提升及改善研究生教育，剌激新思維。」Dr Stewart續說:「雖然各國及各地區提升研究生職業發展的策略及方法有顯著的不同之處，但是是次高峰會的與會者均一致支持推動將研究生的職前準備納入為研生教育的其中一環。」
35位與會者包括世界各地的研究生院院長及領導人，及究研生教育的相關組織。除香港及美國外，與會者分別來自澳洲、巴西、加拿大、中國內地、埃及、法國、德國、土耳其、印度、馬來西亞、紐西蘭、新加坡、西班牙、南非及南韓。

過去幾次高峰會的主題為研究生教育的國際合作(Banff, 2007及San Francisco, 2009)，推廣學術及研究道德及誠信(Florence, 2008)，及評估研究生教育及研究的質素(Brisbane, 2010)。會議的內容將會被整理成一份報告，於2012年出版。
